Alexander Sulakvelidze, PhD

Dr. Alexander "Sandro" Sulakvelidze, Ph.D., is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Intralytix, and an internationally recognized expert in phage technology and infectious disease epidemiology. Dr. Sulakvelidze has served/is serving as the Principal Investigator/Project Director of several grants and contracts from various agencies and foundations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), United States Department of Defense (DOD), United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Food Processors Association (NFPA), Department of Health and Human Services Biotechnology Engagement Program (BTEP), and the Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF).

Dr. Sulakvelidze has published extensively on the subjects of phage therapy, and he is the author of several issued and pending patents related to the field. He also co-edited (with Dr. Elizabeth Kutter) a major book about bacteriophages (for which he also wrote two main chapters related to the use of bacteriophages in agricultural and human therapeutic settings), which was published by the CRC Press in 2005. His phage therapy research has been featured in several magazines and newspapers (including the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Science, Smithsonian and Wired), and in various radio programs and television documentaries (including National Public Radio's Science Friday, BBC Radio and Voice of America radio programs, and BBC Horizon documentary about phage therapy).

Dr. Sulakvelidze serves as an ad hoc reviewer for various journals, such as Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, FEMS Immunology and Medical Microbiology, Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, Food Microbiology, and Journal of Clinical Microbiology, and for several funding agencies, including the CRDF, the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC), the United States-Israel Bi-national Science Foundation (BSF), and the NIH.
