MARKET APPLICABILITY

  Intralytix believes that the market for phages is significant and diversified.  In the medical arena, the company plans to package it products for the following usage:

  • As a therapeutic agent to treat bacterial infections, especially those caused by multi-drug resistant microorganisms and against which there is no currently available or effective treatment modality.  One such application would target infection caused by vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE);
  • As a prophylactic in oral hygiene aimed at eliminating pathogenic bacteria.  Direct applications might include mouthwash and toothpaste;
  • As a topical biodegradable polymer matrix to assist in wound healing; and
  • As a research agent in clinical microbiology and epidemiology.

In the agricultural market, phages can be sold for the following uses:

  • To reduce and potentially eradicate intestinal colonization with pathogenic microorganisms, such as Salmonella in chickens and E. coli in cattle.  Direct application might include powders that can be suspended in drinking water or mixed with food.
  • To treat seeds and plants against specific “problem” microorganisms;
  • For environmental clean-up of chicken houses and poultry processing plants, which would substantially reduce the risk that other flocks would be infected with the specific pathogen;
  • To treat bacterial infections, especially those caused by pathogenic microorganisms against which there are no available or effective antibiotics; and
  • To monitor bacterial contamination in the environment.
