Intralytix Receives First
Regulatory Approval
BALTIMORE, MD., JUNE 5, 2002. – Intralytix, Inc., announced
today that it has received regulatory approval from the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the first in a line of
products designed to prevent bacterial contamination of food and
food processing plants. The first product to receive an
experimental use permit from the EPA is “LMP 102,” a product
that decontaminates food processing plants from Listeria
monocytogenes.
"Listeria contamination of food is a serious and growing
health risk” notes Intralytix’s Chairman, Dr. Torrey Brown. “The
FDA has a zero tolerance for Listeria contamination of food and,
almost on a weekly basis,” he added, “there are significant
recalls of Listeria contaminated food products.” “The EPA permit
will allow Intralytix to complete efficacy studies in actual
plant operations. We intend to be in commercial sales by year’s
end.”
Dr. Brown noted that LMP 102 is the first in a series of
products developed by Intralytix to decontaminate and protect
food products from common bacterial contaminants such as
Listeria, Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli 0157:H7. All of
these products are based upon Bacteriophage technology.
Bacteriophage or phage are natural organisms which kill
bacteria. Phages are perfectly safe for humans and other living
organisms, other than bacteria. “Basically,” reports Dr. Brown,
“Intralytix’s technology permits us to identify nature’s natural
bacteria killers, isolate, multiply and purify them, and then
put them into places where they can do the most good.” “The
great benefit of bacteriophage-based decontaminants” states Dr.
Brown, “is that they are environmentally friendly, replace or
reduce the use of caustic chemicals, reduce the over use of
antibiotics and are effective against antibiotic-resistant
bacteria strains.”
Intralytix is the world’s leading bacteriophage company.
Headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, the company is developing
a broad range of bacteriophage-based products to be used for
food and agricultural decontaminants, decontamination of
industrial and medical facilities and veterinary and human
therapeutics.
